About Our Piano Re-building
  • Artisan approach to re-building pianos. With only a few crafts people working on a piano, close attention to detail and coordination of large projects is achieved. It takes someone who can voice and tune a piano to know how to build the best soundboard.

  • More for your money. Because there is no sales staff, marketing personnel etc., all of your money goes into re-building your piano. You are dealing directly with the craftspeople doing the job.

  • We make our own soundboard panels from carefully selected spruce aged a minimum of two years in the shop. We use only traditional hot hide glue to glue the panels, important to the long-term stability of the soundboard.

  • We make our own soundboard ribs and glue them with hide glue.

  • Our pin blocks are made of solid quarter sawn hard maple in the classic five-ply configuration; a duplicate of the classic pre-war Steinway piano. For improved durability we add a layer of densified multiple ply beech to the top surface.

  • Our Bass strings are custom made for us in a small shop using German Copper and steel on a low-tension hand winding machine.

  • Our treble wire is the best available German Roslau brand.

  • Our tuning pins are the best available German Diamond brand.

  • Renner makes our action parts, shanks and repetitions. Renner is a German company that provides action parts for many of the world finest pianos including Bechstein, Bosendorfer and the Hamburg Steinway. The parts are available in several configurations and are selected to precisely match a variety of action designs.

  • Our hammers are custom made duplicates of classic pre-war Steinway hammers. Just as the originals they are cold pressed on a hand screw Dolge hammer press. The moldings are sapele mahogany, the sides are fully tapered and they are compression wired. We are involved with many aspects of the hammer making process including making the molding, sanding to final shape, compression wiring, boring, coving and tapering

  • Our standard finishes are sprayed gloss lacquer either clear or black. The wood pores are fully filled. All finishes are hand rubbed to the final sheen.
